Chickens

My interest in building urban chicken coops began in the very rural state of Vermont, where I grew up playing among the outbuildings of old dairy farms and raising six hens with my family. Agricultural outbuildings are mysterious structures of utility and innovation. As our food system shifts to factory farms, we not only lose this tradition of folk architecture, but we lose control over the ethics and nutrition of the food we eat. As Vancouver moves toward allowing backyard chickens, we have a unique opportunity to add a new dimension to our gardens and involve youth in a dynamic and vital part of our everyday lives.
